Course Description :

To many people, search engines are indispensable tools for finding information on the Internet. Search engines are big businesses too. They are the key element in building large portals. Because of the wide impact of search engines, it is important for web users to understand the underlying technologies, especially for companies who want to introduce search features on their intranets or build portal businesses around search engines.

Objective :

1. Present the key technologies behind web-based search engines, including problems and features that are unique in a web environment.

2. Provide attendees with the knowledge and skills behind the design of Chinese search engines.

This course is designed for I.T. managers, Internet information providers, librarians and software managers; especially those who have plans to enter the Chinese (or broadly speaking Asian) internet market.

Basic Registration Fee :

Dr. K.F.Wong (CUHK)

Dr. Wong is an Associate Professor of the Department of Systems Engineering & Engineering Management, Chinese University. He is the co-editor of the special issues on "Information Retrieval on Oriental Languages" of the Journal on Computer Processing of Oriental Languages and has numerous publications on Chinese Information System. He also chairs many international conferences on Chinese language computing and information retrieval. He is a committee member on the advisory board of the project "Si Ku Quan Shu" - an electronic Chinese ancient encyclopedia.

Dr. Dik Lun Lee (UST)

Dr. Lee is a Reader of the Computer Science Department, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has a number of publications on Information Retrieval and Search Engine techniques. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses on Information Retrieval. He is one of the pioneers in the construction of a Chinese Search Engine in Hong Kong, http://deer.cs.ust.hk:9000/.

About the CDROM

This multimedia CDROM is an edited video record of our successful short course on the same topic run on 23 and 30 October 1999. The course was designed for I.T. managers, internet information providers, librarians and software managers; especially those who have plans to enter the Chinese (or broadly speaking Asian) internet market. To satisfy the need of those professionals who were unable to attend the course, ACM-HK produced this set of CDROMs. This CDROM set contains roughly 8 hours of lecture recorded using the latest MPEG-4 technology.
